On May 6, 2019, the Chairman of the Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev met with the delegation led by Alexander Gessel, the head of the Political Affairs Directorate of the CE Secretariat, who is visiting our country to learn about the status of fulfillment of obligations undertaken by Azerbaijan after joining the Council of Europe (CE).
At the meeting, the Chairman of the Supreme Court made a speech about the works done on the fulfillment of the commitments, reforms in the judicial system under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the study and application of the European Court of Human Rights precedent.
The Chairman of the Supreme Court stressed the importance of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated April 3, 2019 "On Deepening Reforms in the Judicial-Legal System" and he noted that along with the determination of the directions of activities covering all areas of the judicial system, the appropriate instructions had been given in the Degree on taking serious measures to the Supreme Court to form a unified judicial practice to ensure the sustainability of the courts' approach to legal issues, strengthening of activities in the field of studying and generalization of judicial practice in order to to improve the quality of justice, as well as, the development of appropriate mechanisms to eliminate systemic deficiencies identified as a result of generalizing judicial practice.
Alexander Gessel highly appreciated the reforms in the judicial field, noting that the relations between our country and the Council of Europe are of great importance and that these relations will continue.
The sides exchanged views on issues of mutual interest at the meeting.
Fakhraddin Ismayilov, Permanent Representative of our country to the European Union also attended the meeting.
